Sue's Congo

Zulu’s connection with the Congo

When I was travelling in Africa in 1999 – I didn’t quite make it to the Congo. I chose not to travel the 40Km ( 4 hours) of hard- going dirt mountain roads to see the Gorillas. At that time – a terrible massacre of villagers and tourists had occured in the village below a few weeks beforehad and it was considered still too terribly dangerous to do so.

So I stayed in camp in a village near Bwindi in Uganda’s South -west by the river and played with children instead.

Introducing Lucy Hobgood-Brown and Handup Congo

LHB and the CongoI met Lucy in 2005 as a result of my work with Sri Lankan communities as an entree to International Development and Aid work with communities in Developing countries. I have been a huge fan and supporter of her work ever since.

It’s Lucy’s story that I share with you here in Zulu’s Community.

Lucy is the Director of “Handup Congo” – a hand up is better than a handout. She has been working with communities in the Congo her entire life.

Lucy’s other projects in the Congo include the following – click here for a fact sheet

  • Sewing machines and a sewing school
  • Prenatal Care and healthcare program
  • Education and health initiatives
  • Micro Business and community loan schemes

Congo Canoe Challenge – December 2008

In December, Lucy and her sister Anne will travel back to the Village of their birth – an 800Km, 17 hour journey up river in motorised dug-out canoe.

She is raising funds to help improve the delivery of health care in the village with basic needs like surgical instruments, bedpans, wheelchairs, fetal stethoscopes and solar panels that will power lights in the operating rooms.
